What is UC Online?
UC Online is a UC systemwide initiative to create high-caliber online classes that capitalize on interactive technology to enhance learning. The program develops unparalleled, lower-division courses taught by UC faculty for course credit to non-UC students. UC Online courses have the same prerequisites and involve the same degree of coursework and academic rigor as classes taken on campus.

How does a typical online class work?
UC Online classes are entirely online, and students will learn using a course management system that delivers the lessons in a creative and interesting way. Online learning takes discipline. You’ll be required to complete readings, view lectures, participate in discussion boards, and complete assignments. Some courses may be entirely asynchronous (view lectures and complete assignments at your own pace), while others may require you to attend scheduled online meetings or discussion sections. UC Online courses, as other courses for UC credit, require a significant amount of study time outside of class. Detailed information on a specific course is listed on the individual course pages

Is this a certificate program? 
No, UC Online does not offer a certificate upon course completion. However, UC Online offers real transferable credit that students can use to further their studies either at a UC campus or other institution of higher education.  Take a moment to check out our available courses and determine if this option is right for you. 

Can I complete a degree online?
No, UC Online is not a degree program, but an opportunity to experience high-caliber UC undergraduate courses that will earn the successful student real transferable college credit. Take a moment to check out our available courses and determine if this option is right for you. 

Will the credits I receive transfer?
Successfully completing a UC Online course will earn you transferable UC credit that you can apply at one of our campuses, or likely even to another college or university.  As with all transfer credit, please contact the appropriate UC campus or other institution to determine acceptance of UC Online course credit.  

Are these classes accredited?
Yes. Each course is offered through one of our campuses and all UC campuses are accredited by WASC (Western Association of Schools and Colleges). 

I am a high school student, does UC Online offer concurrent credit?
No. Although a UC Online course may supplement a high school student’s schedule, the UC Online course will not count as credit towards a high school diploma. 

Can I get a transcript?
Yes. Upon completion of a UC Online course, a student may request a transcript here.


How much do online classes cost?
Classes are priced based on their term and units. Typical 4-unit classes are $1,400 or $2,100, depending on the course. In addition, there may be fees for textbooks, proctoring, and other resources. The rate for each course includes a non-refundable $300 processing and administrative fee. 


What are UC Online’s admissions requirements?
Because UC Online offers single courses and not degree programs, there is no formal admissions process.  However, students will need to self-certify that they are ready for college level coursework, and each student will be required to complete all of the coursework to receive transferable course credit. High school students are required to supply a statement of support from their high school teacher or administrator. For more information, please visit this page.  

What are UC Online’s registration deadlines?
Students may register for classes up to the day before the first day of instruction, or until the class has reached capacity, whichever comes first. This will vary depending on the course.

Class Information

How do I register for classes?
Visit the current courses page to complete the registration process.  Payment is due at the time of registration.  Upon registration, students will receive an email confirming registration and provided further instructions for logging in and getting started.

How do I drop a course and what are the deadlines?
To request a drop, log into the registration site, select Academics > Current Sections and follow the prompts to request to drop a course. The course drop request should be completed no later than 21 days after the first day of instruction.

What is the refund policy?
Refunds will be issued in the manner payment was received. Please see chart below for refund schedule.

Course fees are not refundable. Course withdrawals and incompletes are not eligible for refunds. If a course is cancelled by UC Online or if you fail the course entrance or diagnostic exam, a full refund, including the $300 processing and administrative charge, will be granted. You may also request a transfer to another UC Online course. 

Does registering for a UC Online course admit me to the University of California?
No. Registering for a UC Online course does not gain you admission to any UC campus. There is no admissions process to take a UC Online course – students are not admitted to UC.  

If I am enrolled at a UC campus, can I take UC Online classes?
Matriculated UC students - subject to eligibility -  can enroll in a course offered by another UC campus through UC Cross-Campus Enrollment. To enroll in an online course offered by your home campus, please work through your usual process at your home campus registrar’s office.

How long are classes?
Course lengths vary from 5 weeks to 16 weeks, depending on the course and the time of year it’s being offered.  Please refer to the current courses page for further information.

Do I need to attend any orientations?
No. Any orientation will be provided to you during the first day of instruction. You will receive access to your class two weeks prior to the start of instruction.

Do I need to travel to California or to a UC campus to complete any coursework?  Are there any face-to-face classes or meetings?
No. You are not required to be on a UC campus or to meet face-to-face with the instructor or any member of a class.  However, some courses may require you to take exams at a nearby proctoring center. For more information on a specific course requirement, please refer to current courses page.

How can I contact my professor?
Contact information for your professor and any teaching assistants is available on the course syllabus. You will have access to the syllabus in the learning environment for their class.

How do I take exams?
Exam formats depend on the instructor.  See the course information page for details by course.  Some courses use an online proctoring service while others may require you to visit a proctoring center. 

Technical Requirements

What LMS (Learning Management System) does UC Online use for online classes? 
UC Online uses the Canvas LMS as its primary learning management system; however, other learning management systems may be linked to depending on the class.

Where can I get technical help when I’m attending an online class?

What are the technical requirements for online classes?
Ensure that your computer, headset, webcam (optional) and Internet connection meet the following specifications and recommendations.

•    1.4GHz Intel® Pentium® 4 or faster processor (or equivalent) for Microsoft® Windows® XP or Windows 7; 2GHz Pentium 4 or faster processor (or equivalent) for Windows Vista®
•    Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7 (32-bit or 64-bit edition with 32-bit browser)
•    2GB of RAM (4GB recommended)
•    A recent version (no more than 1 year old) of Microsoft Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome
•    Adobe® Flash® Player 10.1 or later

•    500MHz PowerPC® G3 or faster or 1.83GHz Intel Core™ Duo or faster processor
•    Mac OS X 10.4, 10.5, 10.6 or 10.7.2 (Intel); Mac OS X 10.4 (PowerPC)

•    1 GB recommended for hosts and presenters; 512MB of RAM for participants and attendees.
•    It is recommended that hosts and presenters use DSL/cable (wired connection).

•    A USB-based headset and microphone are recommended to help with noise and quality levels. Built-in microphones are not suitable for recorded sessions. Recommended: Plantronics .Audio 655 USB Headset, Logitech Premium USB Headset 350, or Logitech ClearChat Comfort USB Headset.
•    Persons speaking should limit the movement of their headset to allow for optimal audio quality.

•    Built-in cameras are recommended.
Webcams with specifications similar to: Logitech Quickcam for Notebooks and Logitech Quickcam Pro 3000.

International Students

Can international students take UC Online courses?
Anyone who feels prepared to take a UC Online course may register. However, UC Online does not issue I-20s or other documentation for student visas. 
Current immigration regulations restrict international students to one online course per term if already in the US attending another university.  
There is no restriction on the number of online courses an international student can take when enrolling from their home country.  However, all UC Online courses will be conducted in English and may have assignments requiring all students to participate during specific times in the Pacific Time Zone.
